What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
& How Does It Work?
What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Non-surgical decompression therapy works on the injuries such as herniated discs that happen due to nerve compression by applying equal amount of pressure on the vertebrate columns. By stretching the spine, this creates a gap in between the discs, and with improved flow of nutrients through both the vertebrate columns of spine the injuries heal slowly and steadily after regular DRX9000® decompression treatments (the amount will be recommended after your evaluation).
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy Used For?
At San Diego Disc Centers we use the DRX9000® cervical and lumbar spinal decompression machine, which has been cleared by the FDA to treat herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, and posterior facet syndrome.
How Effective is
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?
A 2010 study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders followed 30 patients with chronic low back pain through a 6-week DRX9000 treatment protocol. Patients rated their pain on a 0-10 scale before and after treatment, and average pain scores dropped from 6.2 to 1.6, a statistically significant reduction. The study also found that disc height increased following treatment, suggesting reduced pressure on the disc may play a role in easing pain. No significant adverse events were reported.
Significant Pain Level Decrease
6.2 →1.6
Patients were asked to rate their pain from 1-10 before and after they underwent a 6-week treatment protocol of the DRX9000 spinal decompression machine (Apfel 2010).
What are the Benefits of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?
During the first few sessions, most patients begin to feel the relief from the chronic pain as pressure on your compressed nerve will be relieved, as your spine is in the decompressed state. Our goal is to not only relieve pain but address the root cause, aiming for a more effective and lasting resolution.
Frequently asked questions, answered.
-
Typically, the sessions are just under 30 minutes; 20 DRX9000® treatments sessions are recommended, although in some cases it may require more and will be discussed with you by one of our doctors.
-
If you have and MRI or any imaging and reports related to your injury or pain we will ask that you provide them to the doctor for review prior to your evaluation. Although we do not always require MRIs to qualify for treatment, the doctor may ask for imaging. Don’t worry we have worked with hundreds of patients, we’ll walk you through the process of obtaining imagery.

Many insurance plans cover examinations and chiropractic treatments. However, it is important to note that spinal decompression procedures are not currently covered by insurance plans. Patients involved in automobile accidents may find coverage through their auto insurance policies, while spinal decompression is generally not covered under most workers' compensation injury plans. Additionally, it is common for insurance companies to cover the expenses associated with MRI scans. Please check your individual eligibility, or call our office for assistance.

During your first few sessions, most patients begin to feel the relief from the chronic pain as pressure on your compressed nerve will be relieved as your spine is in the decompressed state. After your treatments you may feel initial soreness in your back as muscles are stretched that normally are not. Before treatment, please disclose any pain, or other injuries that might have occurred since your last visit.

Yes, non-surgical spinal decompression is considered the safe alternative to surgical spinal decompression. Please disclose any medical conditions with the doctor prior to treatment to ensure you are a candidate for treatment.
